Mum can be very focused indeed when it comes to the significant challenge of raising a child and it is understandable that her main focus may not, for the time being, be on her career, which will be on hiatus. Thankfully, our society is very understanding and mum is very rarely in a financial bind during these all-important days.</p>
<p>While some women put a great deal of effort into planning their entire working career around their life aspirations, planning in intricate detail what will happen from the moment they find out that they are expecting a child, all the way through a transition back to regular work, for most of us this represents a process of discovery. The vast majority of women find it very difficult to determine how their life will unfold in front of them, whether it be in career terms or personal life and most especially given the uncertainty caused by bad economic times. Such economic turmoil is enough to throw anyone&#8217;s plans off track, but for the mother getting ready to return to work after her break, it can be a particularly stressful time.</p>

This is not always the case, though, as we always seem to be playing catch-up, even though we have the most honourable intentions in mind. In this way, when the sun sets and the evening approaches, we end up feeling frustrated, wondering why we have not been able to do everything that we had set out to do. As a busy working mum, we certainly know about time constraints and wish we could find an extra hour, each day, somehow. Is this possible?</p>
<p>1. Set up your phone so that all calls are processed before they reach you. There are some great programs available these days, including Google Voice, which will help you to prioritise the calls that you really need to take, from the calls that can wait. You can even block unwanted or troublesome calls through the system. It&#8217;s almost like having a personal secretary and will certainly help you to avoid those wasteful minutes, which can add up.</p>
<p>2. Learn about outsourcing. While we know that it is difficult to find a good childminder and you might be taking on this task yourself when working or tele-commuting from home, understand that other chores can be outsourced, including daily cleaning work.</p>
<p>3. It might be time for you to find a good time management software package, but take the time to learn how to use it. At first glance it can feel a bit strange, but if you are prepared to stick with it, it will certainly help you to focus and this by itself will save a great deal of time, each day.</p>
<p>4.  Plan as much as you want, but make sure you follow through. If you have a rather muddled list of things that you have to accomplish in your head, you will bounce back and forth between these chores and not be efficient. Before you go to bed, or immediately when you wake up in the morning, spend time planning out exactly what you are going to do.</p>
<p>5. You need to set aside an hour for communication. This time will include your access to Facebook or other social networks, time to check e-mail and to make all those phone calls that you need to return. You would be amazed how much time can be lost if you&#8217;re constantly checking e-mails or taking phone calls without a structured plan.</p>
<p>6. You must insert a &#8220;buffer&#8221; from time to time when you are planning. This means that you should not plan one task after another within an unrealistic time frame. By inserting your &#8220;buffer,&#8221; if you get delayed, sidetracked or fall behind your schedule in any way, you will be okay.</p>
<p>7. Combine your exercise time with &#8220;catching up&#8221; time. If you allocate, as you should, a minimum of 30 minutes to 45 minutes a day for physical activity, combine this with your time to catch up on the news and current affairs. To do this you might have to put a TV in your home gym, utilise that electronic book reader or even just listen to a particular news or media channel as you go.</p>

<p>So BBC television in the UK decided to undertake a large-scale study.  They teamed up with the Alzheimer&#8217;s Society and the British Medical Research Council, and together they came up with a scientific study of the effects of playing brain training games on people&#8217;s ability to remember things and other mental skills.  The published results were quite surprising.</p>
<p>The team took on 13000 adult volunteers to take part in their rigorous experiment over a period of six weeks. The objective was to see whether exercising the brain on a variety of tasks engineered to use different regions of the brain (such as the temporal lobes for memory and the parietal lobes for math), would improve brain abilities, such as memory and problem-solving skills. </p>
<p>In accordance with proper experimental design practice, there were two groups of participants in the experiment.  Volunteers were randomly assigned either to the experimental or the control group.  </p>
<p>The experimental group spent ten minutes a day for six weeks playing a set of brain training games designed to exercise a large spectrum of mental skills including memory.  When retested at the end of the study, their ability to perform the brain games they had trained on had improved by a third, against their initial performance in them.  The control group spent the same amount of time as the others surfing the internet.</p>
<p>The purpose of the study was to see if getting experienced at brain training tasks would bring about improvement in the same abilities when utilized in a different framework. So both groups of subjects were tested before and after the study in their ability to accomplish tasks such as problem-solving and reproducing number sequences.</p>
<p>Upon retesting at the end of the trial, the control group&#8217;s score had improved by 4.35 per cent. Surprisingly however, the score for the experimental group was almost identical. It represented only a 6.52 per cent increase over its original score. So, statistically there was no difference between the two groups. Of course, what they could not conclude was whether the small improvement was just the effect of working online. Perhaps there could have been another group that did nothing online.</p>
